Going into the 2022 season, one, if not the primary concern on the team, may be cornerback. After losing JC Jackson in free agency to the Chargers, Coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots have a significant void at that position.
One of the moves to sure up this position was signing a former Super Bowl Hero. However, after making several other moves, the team may have found some answers. In this article, we will see if that was one of the right moves to replace the void at cornerback and improve the position.
Who Covers Explosive AFC East Wide Receivers
Who will stop the likes of Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, and Elijah Moore in the Afc East?? Will the return of Malcolm Butler provide the answer at cornerback? Will Jonathan Jones return from his injury to his elite form in previous years? Could Jalen Mills improve in year two with the Patriots and give the team a solid performance in 2022. Finally, Myles Bryant is still young but improving each year. Could this be his breakout year? However, the following three players could be the answer for the Patriots in 2022.
Could The Patriots’ Shaun Wade Be An Answer?
First is Shaun Wade, whom the Patriots traded for last season from the Ravens. At Ohio State, Wade was a solid piece to Ohio State’s secondary that contributed to the nation’s No. 1 pass defense in 2019. In 2018 Wade played in 14 games and finished with 31 tackles and three interceptions for the Buckeyes. If Wade could return to form as he played in college, the Patriots may have found a solid player who could be a mainstay on their defense.
Could Another Jones Start At Cornerback for the Patriots in 2022?
With their 3rd round pick in this year’s draft, the Patriots drafted Marcus Jones out of Houston. In college, he was best known for his special teams play as a kick returner. The loss of Gunner Olszewski, the returner for the Patriots the past few seasons, leaves a significant hole on the team.
This could provide a spot for Jones to take over and immediately impact the team. A very intriguing 4th-round draft pick Jack Jones out of Arizona State, could be the answer. Jack Jones brings a swagger about himself the provide elite skills to compete in the NFL. Since joining the team, he hasn’t been disappointed as he has been challenged in OTA’s and Mandatory minicamp and has looked great.
Former Super Bowl Hero Malcolm Butler Returns
The most intriguing move of the offseason may have been Malcolm Butler resigning with the Patriots. Finally, after spending the past four seasons away from the Patriots, signing with Tennessee and last season Arizona but walking away from football, he is back home.
The last we saw him in New England was when he was benched in that famous Superbowl against the Eagles. Back to football and back to the Patriots with a chip on his shoulder to prove he belongs. So far, he has looked like the Butler of old, and if that continues to work out, he will lessen the loss of JC Jackson and be CB1.
2022 could lead to a long season with the current stable of cornerbacks, and we have to defend those powerful Wide Receivers in the AFC East. However, with the return of elite cornerback Malcolm Butler, veterans Jalen Mills and Jonathan Jones mixed in with a stud rookie who is showing he can play in Jack Jones, the Patriot’s cornerbacks may surprise and be a cut above the league in 2022.
